Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Monday addressed the attendees of the AI Action Summit in Paris, emphasizing how artificial intelligence (AI) is set to reshape the world.
Drawing from personal experiences during his formative years in Chennai, India, Pichai shared how technology’s gradual arrival shaped his perspective.
“Each new technology took a while to arrive at our doorstep,” he said, sharing how even bringing his mother’s blood-test results from the hospital was a major struggle that would make up a four hour round trip.
“Sometimes I would go all the way to the hospital and they would say, ‘No, it’s not ready. Come back tomorrow.,'” he shared.
Pichai likened AI to a once-in-a-lifetime technology that could surpass the revolutions brought by personal computing or mobile advancements.
“We were on a five-year waitlist for a rotary phone. It changed our lives,” he recalled in his prepared remarks for the event, as he built into how AI is set to play a similar crucial role in the lives of many, especially in the developing world.
He spotlighted the dramatic reduction in costs for developers processing information, highlighting a cost decrease of 97% over 18 months.
“Intelligence is more available and accessible than ever before,” he stated, forecasting that every company and sector would integrate AI.
According to the Google CEO, opportunity with AI is as big as it ever gets and it is up the global leaders to ensure “as many people as possible benefit.”
Pichai’s vision of AI extends beyond just Google. It involves creating a platform shift, where AI feels intuitive and human-like, enhancing human capabilities and bridging gaps in knowledge and language.
This sentiment is echoed amidst rising AI competition, including in the launch of the first AI agents from the likes of OpenAI and Microsoft subsidiary Github.
Google itself after falling behind in the AI race and seeing its stock plummet has ramped up its AI initiatives, particularly around Gemini models.
The tech giant recently took Gemini 2.0 to production and has launched the Gemini 2.0 Pro at an experimental level.
Google is particularly competing on providing its models to developers at throwaway prices and also integrating it — without separate costs — in its products for both individuals and enterprises.
