OpenAI has begun rolling its emotional quotient (EQ) oriented model GPT-4.5 to Plus users, the company announced on Wednesday.
GPT-4.5, dubbed the “EQ Model” due to its enhanced emotional intelligence capabilities, represents OpenAI’s next major step in aligning AI responses with human emotional contexts.
The company stated the model significantly improves understanding and generation of nuanced emotional expressions, a leap intended to elevate AI-human interactions.
With GPT-4.5, interactions should feel less transactional and more empathetic, according to Sam Altman.
This model isn’t just geared to understand context — but to grasp tone, sentiment, and the subtle emotional cues humans naturally communicate.
The rollout for ChatGPT Plus subscribers began Wednesday and will span approximately one to three days, according to OpenAI’s recent statements.
Plus users pay for premium access at $20 a month. GPT-4.5 was first rolled out to Pro users last week that shell out $200 every month.
OpenAI has cautioned about possible adjustments in usage rates.
“We’d like to give everyone with access to GPT-4.5 a sizable rate limit,” the company said.
“But we anticipate these limits will shift as we gauge user demand for this notably more complex—affectionately termed ‘chonky’ — model.”
There is no limit stated in the interface at the time of writing.
GPT-4.5 is the most expensive OpenAI model thus far, available at $75 per million input token and $150 output. Compare that with O1’s $15 input and $60 output or GPT-4o’s $2.5 input and $10 output, available via the APIs.
