Indian telecom giant Bharti Airtel on Tuesday announced it has entered into a partnership with Elon Musk-led SpaceX to bring its Starlink satellite internet service to India.
Airtel said the the company would sell Starlinks through its stores and explore offering Starlink services to its business customers as part of the partnership.
The company said the partnership is still contingent on SpaceX getting approval to sell Starlink in India.
The Bigger Picture: The fact that the two companies have entered into a partnership — which is the first such for any of Musk’s companies in India — means that the talks between him and the Indian government have made a breakthrough.
Starlink is especially useful in rural or remote areas that are more different to reach by existing prominent methods of internet delivery like fibre optic cables.
Musk’s Starlink has also been crucial in war zones, including being heavily deployed on both sides in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War.
The world’s richest person had met PM Modi on the latter’s visit to the U.S. roughly three weeks ago.
The partnership also assumes significance as it comes at a time when Musk’s ally and U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to impose tougher tariffs against India, claiming reciprocality.
